Two Indian Army soldiers were killed in a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, marking another grim chapter in the region’s long-standing conflict. The attack, which targeted a military patrol in the remote Poonch district, has reignited concerns over escalating violence in the restive region.
According to defense officials, the explosion occurred during a routine security operation in a densely forested area near the Line of Control (LoC), a de facto border dividing Indian and Pakistani-administered Kashmir. The soldiers, part of a counter-insurgency unit, were reportedly conducting searches when the device detonated. Both were critically injured and later succumbed to their wounds.
“We’ve lost two brave hearts in this cowardly act. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten,” said a senior Army spokesperson, urging locals to cooperate with forces to “root out terrorism.” The area has since been cordoned off, with combing operations underway to track the perpetrators. No group has claimed responsibility yet, though officials suspect involvement of Pakistan-based militants—a claim Islamabad has long denied.
